VICDOC Autumn 2025 - Magazine - Page 45
In February 2025, Geographic Names
Victoria confirmed that all nominations
had been accepted and distributed to local
councils for inclusion in their name banks.
While it may take time for names to be
assigned, this marks a significant step in
ensuring that these trailblazing women are
considered for public commemoration.
The nomination process involved
research, biographical documentation,
and engagement with families to ensure
accuracy. AMA Victoria thanks Geographic
Names Victoria for facilitating this process,
as well as everyone who contributed
nominations, assisted with research, or
provided support throughout the process.
The primary resource in compiling these
nominations was Strength of Mind – 125
Years of Women in Medicine, an extensive
historical record published by the University
of Melbourne’s Medical History Museum.
This publication provided essential
biographical insights and contextualised
the broader struggle for gender equity
in medicine. AMA Victoria appreciates
the University’s work in preserving these
histories and making them accessible for
initiatives such as Name A Place.
Our primary resource
in compiling our
nominations for Name
A Place initiative was
Strength of Mind 125 Years of Women
in Medicine. It's an
inspiring read!
THE WOMEN WE NOMINATED
-
Each of these medical pioneers made
lasting contributions to Victorian and
Australian healthcare through research,
